This is a fabulous mini lesson and lab that allows students to explore the history and science of jams and jellies during a ten to fifteen day time frame.
 
Students will learn about the history, create a timeline, go over the procedure for making jelly and/or jam. You can find this lesson and others in the Semester I Bundle!
 
Objectives:
  1. Make their own jam.
  2. Distinguish the difference between jelly and jam through a taste test and other information.
  3. Explain what pectin is and the importance it plays in preserving fruit.

Materials Needed:
4 samples of jelly and jam- Just enough for the class to taste test them. I like to do 1 set of grape in a jelly and jam and then another flavor. For example:
– 1 strawberry jelly
– 1 strawberry jam
– 1 grape jelly
– 1 grape jam
1 loaf of bread
Toaster
Knife for everyone in class for day 1
Spoon for everyone in class for day 1
Pint jars (4 jars x number of groups)
